General Courses --- These will develop the ability needed to support the future society

In the General Studies curriculum, too, we have put into place a distinctive approach to education. There are many electives in the curriculum, allowing students the flexibility to fashion their own schedules, according to their own interests and needs. We have undertaken to provide a "free elective curriculum". Students can focus on their coursework over the course of the five-day academic week. On Saturdays, we also offer intensive supplementary courses and special classes for various licensing exams. At NIHS, each student receives the individualized support he or she needs in order to thrive academically.

•  Students Master a Diverse Curriculum Designed to Promote Their Growth. We also Offer Students the Chance to Take Elective Classes on Saturdays.

Since adopting a five-day school week several years ago, we have made a special effort to create opportunities for students to develop their skills by taking elective classes on Saturdays and during long vacations. Students can pursue their own interests and take classes that will help them realize their future ambitions. Students can study Japanese or local history, do geographical research, can learn to communicate with the international community via the internet and so forth. Students can also participate in extra-academic activities such as fishing and camping.

•  In Their Second and Third Year, Students Have the Chance to Take Elective Classes Depending on their Individual Interests and Needs.

In the first year, all students take required courses. However, in the second and third years students can take elective courses that suit their own interests and ambitions. At our school, we have noticed an increasing number of students going on to study at liberal arts colleges. We have, in response, undertaken to provide electives that will prepare these students for those colleges' entrance examinations.

• London and Paris

In their second year, students in the General Studies division participate in "Frontier Spirit Program Educational Travel", visiting London and Paris. This trip is not merely a tourist trip. It is instead an opportunity for students to experience foreign countries and to have interact with the people who live there. Students have a chance to experience the cultures and customs of England and France and to share their own culture with the people there. Students have the opportunity to attempt to communicate with foreigners. Our students aim to take an active part in the future "international" society. Making this trip is a good start for them
